Replacing the shock absorbers of a Triumph
Driving with good suspension means enjoying efficient and safe handling for everyday comfort. But, and we know this less, it also protects the engine and frame of your Triumph.
Changing your rear suspension is motivated by two reasons: the first, to replace defective shock absorbers (oil leak, etc.) or at the end of their life, which make driving dangerous. The second reason will be motivated by a search for increased performance, additional comfort or for an aesthetic need linked for example to a Café racer, Scrambler, Tracker, Bobber or other style preparation.
How motorcycle rear shock absorbers work
In order to guarantee optimal comfort for the driver and his passenger, it is necessary for the rear shock absorber to keep the wheel in contact with the ground. The suspension (front and rear), connecting the wheels to the chassis, requires effective adjustment which ensures the responsiveness of the shock absorbers and therefore good road holding .
Shocks felt with more or less force depending on the road conditions are absorbed at the fork or at the rear of the motorcycle by the springs or the hydraulic suspension system. Combined with tires, they provide effective damping, eliminating vibrations and ensuring excellent grip , whatever the traffic conditions, speed, braking and angle taken in curves and bends.
The hydraulic part regulates the oscillations and balances the energy deployed by the spring. Inside the tube, the valves control the rise and fall of the rod ( compression and expansion ). When to change the rear shock absorbers of your Triumph?
It is often difficult to know when the time has come to replace your rear shock absorbers. Habit and natural adaptation to riding your motorcycle make detecting a malfunction complicated. The wear of the shock absorbers is progressive over time. The properties of hydraulic oil diminish over the kilometers without us really realizing it.
It is generally considered that the effectiveness of a motorcycle's rear shock absorbers reduces after 50,000 km . However, it is a simple indicator , knowing that shock absorbers can fail before or perform their role effectively beyond this indicative threshold.
The range, age, mileage, traffic conditions are all factors that must be considered in the wear of the shock absorbers.
While an oil leak caused by worn seals will definitely alert you, it is important to take into consideration the unusual reactions of your Triumph. A locking of the rear wheel following braking, frequent bounces when going over bumps, speed bumps, or even a feeling of instability of the motorcycle when exiting a turn are warning signals about the condition of your shock absorbers back.
